How to Use Lemon Balm for Anxiety

Lemon balm, also known as Melissa, is a perennial member of the mint family. It’s one of those unassuming herbs that doesn’t generally get a ton of attention. But thanks to the Medical Medium, this magical herb is growing in popularity. Why is this such a good thing? Well, lemon balm can address so many conditions and symptoms that just about anyone on this planet could benefit from using it regularly. But perhaps the best general use of it is to calm the nervous system and help relieve anxiety. Below you’ll learn how to use lemon balm for anxiety and why it’s a great idea to bring it into your daily life.

Whether you’re looking for a substitute for anti anxiety medication or you’re finding yourself pushed over by the intense times we’re living in, lemon balm can offer amazing anxiety help. Personally, when I’m experiencing anxiety, what helps more than anything is taking a few dropper fulls of an alcohol-free lemon balm tincture. Sure, there are pharmaceuticals that can temporarily give us some relief. However, when we use natural medicinals like lemon balm, not only do we find some relief, but we aren’t adding more toxins to the body. In fact, we are helping to eliminate the toxins already accumulated in the body. Lemon balm helps the body detox while also chipping away at harmful bacteria and viruses that might have taken up residence in the body over time.

Addressing the Root Cause of Anxiety

The interesting thing about this is that all of these toxins can contribute greatly to anxiety. See, it’s a sort of self-perpetuating cycle. One of the things toxicity in the body can cause is neurological problems and a sensitive central nervous system – including symptoms like anxiety. This can also cause things like sensitive nerves in the digestive tract which is why you’ll often find that people with anxiety issues also have digestive issues.It’s one of those multi-functional tools since it not only helps address the anxiety currently, but it also helps to address the root cause helping the body eliminate some of its toxic load.

It also helps to ground your energy which is something that we need more of when we are experiencing anxiety – especially during these times of great change that we’re all in the midst of. Those of us sensitive to the cosmic energetics can find respite in lemon balm. Grounding exercises on their own are incredibly valuable as well – but lemon balm is sort of a two-in-one in that way!

Lemon Balm : How to Use it

Finding ways to bring in lemon balm during your day can really help shift things. And though it is a great start, it is but one of the tools and puzzle pieces.

-Tea – drink a fresh brewed cup of it a couple times a day – you can use the fresh herb or the dried herb. Pour hot filtered water into a mug and add in a tbsp of dried herb or a prepared tea bag. I prefer Traditional Medicinals which you can find here If you use the fresh herb, you will need more.

-Alcohol-free Tincture – Start a little slow with this method. If you have high toxicity, this can start to knock it down, but you don’t want to detox too fast. Try working up to a few droppers a day. This method is better for more acute situations and you can take a good bit in one day – no more than 10 dropper fulls.

-Drinking water – Try putting it in your [filtered] drinking water. Whether you have the fresh herb or dried, you can drink lemon balm infused water through the day so you get a slow drip of it.

-Smoothies and Salads – You can start tossing it in salads or smoothies. This is especially great with the fresh herb.

Other Uses for Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm is also beneficial in treating the following symptoms and conditions:

  1. Tics and spasms

  2. Chronic fatigue

  3. Dizziness

  4. Nausea

  5. Pain (jaw pain, head pain, neck pain, body pain)

  6. Tingles, numbness, humming, buzzing, vibrations

  7. Ringing in the ears

  8. Tightness of chest

  9. Lyme disease, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Multiple sclerosis, and other autoimmune conditions

Growing Lemon Balm

As if all of that isn’t enough, this bushy lemon fragranced herb is super easy to grow. In fact, it’s so easy it will take over your garden if you let it! Seeing as how versatile and healing it is, it’s really not a bad problem to have. So, if you decide to grow it, you will have plenty to go around! And it’s easy to grow in a variety of climates. I highly suggest giving it a try. Even if you don’t have much of a green thumb, it’s one of the easier plants to grow and it’s super low maintenance.

Lemon Balm for Sleep

Lastly, given the effect lemon balm has on the nervous system, it might go without saying but this herb is a fantastic insomnia remedy. Drinking some lemon balm tea before bed time and even having some lemon balm tincture alongside that can be quite helpful. When I find myself affected by high cosmic energies, I might wake up in the middle of the night take a few droppers of my alcohol free lemon balm. It works wonders.
